Flower of Wave, Flower of Dream

Brainstorms in our TTIP classes have been fun. Some topics that we have been discussing are that how to keep balance between “loyalty” to the original texts with the “accessibility” to the contemporary and future readers? How to play with the phenomena of language to convey something beyond language? How to use “finger” to point […]

Paying Attention Until the Light Bursts Forth (On Turning Study into Contemplative Practice)

We live in a world in which attention is a primary resource, a “pearl of great price”. It is our primary resource for the practice of dharma and for living an ethical and meaningful life. But it also has become a primary resource for toxic, extractive economical practices. Increasingly the global economy has shifted from […]

Buddha Dharma.

It is not about being creative of new knowledge, It is about being appreciative of precious knowledge.  It is not about ascending to a higher realm, It is about descending from a mountain of ego.  It is not about taking everything available, It is about giving anything available.  It is not about being culturally critical, It is about being […]

RYI from a Distance

I won’t lie, every time the return to in-person classes gets delayed further I’m disappointed. I miss living in Nepal, I miss the Stūpa, I miss seeing everyone in class and talking in the hallways or at Utpala. But it’s not like I can do anything about it, so I’ve decided to accept it as a new […]

1. [A Whirlwind of Semester] This past semester has been very special in many ways. Having finished my first semester last year here at RYI, I was quite looking forward to forge deeper into the “torturing” yet enchanting Tibetan language. Everything was peaceful and on the right track before the reading week until the outbreak […]

What does this mean?

During my time here at RYI, I began having a completely different experience to the Buddhism that I knew. Having grown up in a Buddhist family, I had some experience of Buddhist practice and culture, but had never fully immersed myself in any specific text where the Buddhist terminology is used. I had of course some idea of what they meant, but never […]

A Joy of Learning

The Joy of Learning My journey to RYI has been an unexpected one! My decision to transition from practicing music therapy to studying full-time within a time span of mere months has been a process both challenging and motivating. My engagement in this course has introduced me to Buddhist philosophical texts, history and language studies […]

Grandeur of Tibetan Monastic Training and Some Reflections

I have lived in Nepal for almost one year and I feel extremely fortunate to study Tibetan language at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI). RYI, being the Buddhist Studies center of the Kathmandu University, is a very unusual kind of an institution considering the Western notions of academic colleges and universities. The most noteworthy feature […]
