My first summer studying in Nepal—My first experience learning Tibetan in the traditional approach

-Trung Thanh Nguyen, BA student from Vietnam

Thanks to Our Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, this summer (in 2023) I had a great opportunity to participate in the Tibetan classes organized by the Dharma Gyan Vidyalaya. My Tibetan has been improving a lot since I joined in the Tibetan classes, and I also had many great experiences for my spiritual developments.

I was so surprised with the number of people joining in all Tibetan and textual study classes. There were around 1000 participants. The first day of the orientation was full of participants sitting in the Old Lhakhang, and many of them had to sit in the front of the Lhakhang because there was not enough space to sit inside. They are all devoted and diligent practitioners who are very interested in learning Tibetan and Dharma texts.

I was so amazed with the educational methodology of the monk teachers. They are all very knowledgeable and good at teaching. I was very happy to attend the class every day from Monday to Friday. There were around 100 students in each class. The number of students in each class seemed to be quite large for effective teaching. However, with the traditional method for learning Tibetan and the skillful monk teachers, we all studied very well and effectively.

I was inspired a lot by the diligence and devotion of all of the students. They come from different range of ages, but they are all devoted and diligent towards their Tibetan and textual learning. There was an eighty-year-old lady who had studied in the Tibetan class for three years and she is still so keen on learning Tibetan for the sake of her Dharma practice and Tibetan chanting. In addition, students attended the classes every day, even on the days when the weather was so bad.

We were all very happy once Our Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche visited all the Tibetan and textual study classes. He gave a lot of compliments on the diligence of all the students and on the hard work of all the monk teachers. He also encouraged all students to try their best for the sake of learning Dharma and spiritual practices.

This was my great memory in my first summer studying at RYI and living in Kathmandu, Nepal. From the depth of my heart, I would like to express my big thanks to Our Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery for giving me a great opportunity to experience the traditional environment of learning Tibetan. In addition, I would like to say thanks to all students for their inspiration, devotion and strong faith in learning and practicing Dharma, which has inspired me for my Tibetan studies and my spiritual practice.
